Objective: To evaluate the effect of modified Zhenwu decoction on left heart function in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients combined with heart failure. Methods: A total of 100 patients with CHD combined with heart failure were randomly divided into a treatment group (n=50) and a control group (n=50). The 2 groups received routine western medicine, then the treatment group received modified Zhenwu decoction additionally. Left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were measured by two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) on the day of admission to hospital and on the 90th day after hospitalized, respectively. Plasma N-terminal brain natriuretic propeptide (NT-pro-BNP) levels were determined at the same time. Results: Compared with the data before treatment, the LVEDD and the LVESD were significantly reduced in both the treatment group and the control group (both P<0.01), the LVEF in the 2 groups were increased significantly (both P<0.01), the level of NT-pro-BNP in plasma in the 2 groups were decreased significantly (both P<0.01). After treatment, the above indexs improved obviously in treatment group than those in the control group (all P<0.01). Conclusion: The treatment of conventional western medicine drugs plus Zhenwu decoction has the advantage over conventional western medicine drugs alone in improvement of left ventricular function and ventricular remodeling.
