Abstract
Objective: To investigate the psychological distress state of the parents of children with autism and its correlation with stigma and self-compassion. Methods: The convenience sampling method was used in this study. A total of 84 children with autism were involved in this survey. The demographic data of the subjects were collected by a self-compiled general questionnaire. The 10-Item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (Kessler10) was used to investigate the state of psychological distress. The Perceived Devaluation and Discrimination Scale (PDD) was used to investigate the level of stigma. The Delf-Compassion Scale (SCS) was used to investigate the level of self-compassion. The frequency and percentage were used to describe the demographic characteristics. The state of psychological distress, stigma, and self-compassion were counted. The correlation between the variables were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. Results: The Kessler10 score for psychological distress was 24.6±5.7 in this group of autistic children’s parents. The parents with no psychological distress (score 10~19) accounted for 16.7% (14/84), mild distress (score 20~24) accounted for 32.1% (27/84), moderate distress (score 25~29) accounted for 40.5% (34/84), and severe distress (score 30~50) accounted for 10.7% (9/84). The PDD score of the parents of autistic children was 30.6±7.3, and the SCS score was 86.3±11.4. The Kessler10 scores was positively correlated with PDD score (r=0.438, P<0.001), and negatively correlated with SCS score (r=0.663, P<0.001). Conclusion: The psychological distress state of the parents of children with autism is serious. The psychological distress is associated with stigma and self compassion. To reduce the stigma, improve the level of self compassion, may help to improve the degree of psychological distress of parents of autistic children.
