Objective: To assess the severity of the pain among perioperative period of dental implant and identify the risk factors of pain relief. Methods: We enrolled adult patients with dental implant at Department of Dentistry, Nanjing First Hospital, Nanjing Medical University. We measured the severity of pain before surgery (T0), immediately after surgery (T1) and 1 week after surgery (T2) by visual analogue scale. Other variables related with demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. We compared the severity of pain at three time points by univariate analysis. We defined pain reliving as the VAS scoring at T2 less than 3, and screened the risk factors about pain relief. Results: A total 107 patients were enrolled and completed the questionnaires. The severity of pain at T1 was higher than T0 and T2. There were no significant pain among included patients. Pain score in patients at 18–59 years old was lower than those at 60 years or older (P<0.05). Age ≤60 years and male were the promote factors for pain relief. Conclusion: Patient self-assessment indicates that implant placement is a mild to moderately painful procedure. However, the pain after implant placement one week will be relieved as or lower than before operation.
