Abstract
Diabetic endothelial dysfunction and impaired angiogenesis are closely related to the occurrence of diabetic cardiovascular complications. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are bone marrow-derived cells that play an important role in endothelialization and vascular repair after injury. They can promote vascularization either by incorporation into nascent blood vessels or by the paracrine production of angiogenic factors. The decreased number and impaired function of diabetic EPCs are closely connected with peripheral atherosclerosis, indicating the severity of diabetic macroangiopathy. Blood flow recovery can be promoted by improving the function of EPCs in diabetic ischemia models. Thus, EPCs might be a potential therapeutic target for diabetic macroangiopathy.
